” A little birdie told me so…”

As I write this tonight I’m watching Jeopardy’s Tournament of Champions (white noise more than anything else), one of the contestants mentioned thanking various people and Twitter. It seems that cute little bluebird creeps into the most innocent of conversations.

Twitter separates itself from other social media sites with the 140 character limit to a post. A pleasant relief from the sometime long winded Facebook postings we often see. Yet, those 140 characters can hold a great deal of power in personal, professional relationships as well as with marketing. What might begin as a short comment often continues to grow through the use of #hashtags and followers.Twitter minute headline1

I, myself, have connected with many through Twitter, especially in regard to West Virginia University (WVU) football and basketball. It becomes a connection to an away game, a platform to vent, to learn information and to even find a tailgate party at a game. It never amazes me how a simple “follow” can actually lead to a potential friendship through not just Twitter but face-to-face. Although there is a 140 character limit, the thread that is created might speak volumes.

Now as with all forms of communication there are rules to be followed ( and yes, these rules are often broken- especially the one about complaining).

As with all social media one can easily become addicted to Twitter. I myself become obsessed with Twitter during WVU football and basketball events that I might not be able to attend; or in conversations surrounding these sports such as polls, signing day and now the upcoming bowl game speculation.

Twitter has gained popularity both as a social forum medium as well as a marketing tool. The marketing aspect  can be from both the marketer and the consumer and therefore relate to positive or negative interactions. Twitter has become a method to “vent” when one isn’t always able to do so with equal results ( meaning, involve a greater number of people); it has also become a means to announce upcoming events and promotions such as:

Twitter has become a valuable marketing tool today. The benefits, although sometimes abstract at first, will likely outweigh the minuses and both the consumer and the company/product/ brand will come out winners.
